i find that more and more i am grateful for the rhythm of my life with todd. we both had expected that mother's day would be low-key, and todd knew that i already felt honored and appreciated so a big to-do wasn't necessary. he did give me just the gift i had wanted and the kids made me cards and the whole mother's day package would have been brilliant...except that i spent the first 5 hours of it at the ER with Lily, who had a massive allergic reaction to amoxicillin. she came in our room first thing complaining that she was itchy all over. she had just taken her last dose of amox the night before and in hindsight we remembered that she was a little bit itchy on saturday (but we had also been at the soccer fields all morning so an environmental cause was highly likely). she was only on our bed for two seconds because she hopped up and dashed for our bathroom, saying she was going to be sick. i followed her in there and she was sitting on the floor next to the toilet. she had not thrown up and then she hopped up again onto the potty. i left the room for a second and todd came in, telling her she needed a shower to wash off whatever was making her itch (we were still thinking environmental cause). he started the shower and when he turned back to lily she was passed out, sideways on the toilet with her head in the trash can. todd went to wake her up and she started screaming nonsense. he laid her on the floor and i came back in. we were both trying to ask her questions and her eyes would barely open and then roll back into her head. she would grunt an answer here and there, but she was really out of it. we laid her on the bed and she started to perk up a bit, but she was still really puny. she started complaining about her belly hurting and i told todd she had to go to the ER. we were out the door moments later. from wake-up to checking in at the hospital was 26 minutes. when they checked her blood pressure it was ridiculously low and she couldn't even sit up long enough to have them take it--it was like 40 something over 20 something. by now a rash had begun to bloom and was appearing all over her body. they gave her fluids and IV benadryl and the rash started to look a little better. this is about when her joints started to swell--mostly ankles, knees, wrists and elbows. after a few hours of observation and finally checking her urine, they decided to send us home. she was coherent and had color in her face again and the rash was not quite as bad.
we followed up at the pediatrician's office today and he said that her passing out was a result of her being slightly dehydrated plus having a systemic allergic reaction to her amoxicillin. the rash has only gotten worse and she really is covered head to toe with hives--very very itchy! her feet are so swollen that she can't put her shoes on and it's painful to walk

so, suffice it to say that mother's day was not exactly how i thought it would go...but the beauty of it is i really had no expectations of how it would go so i really wasn't disappointed. i was so grateful that my sweet girl was ok and that this should be better in about a week and that other than being allergic to amoxicillin, she will have no lasting side-effects...just a great story to tell her friends (along with some impressive rash pictures). i can't tell you all the scary things that ran through my mind when lily was on the bathroom floor, eyes rolling...but i know that JESUS was in control...and i am grateful. what more could a mother ask for? happy mother's day indeed :) cheers
